On March 20, international students of Sichuan University (SCU) took a field trip to Xicun (West Village in English) Courtyard in Chengdu. Teachers from the School of Overseas Education at SCU organized this trip for the international students to experience the local culture of Chengdu. This day trip not only allowed students to practice oral Chinese, but also enabled them to apply Chinese in real world scenarios, enhancing their language proficiency.

First of all, the staff of Xicun Courtyard Studio guided the international students to view various art works, ranging from vivid character sketches to personal style watercolor graffiti. The art works reflected Chengdu's profound cultural heritage and artistic atmosphere. In the meantime, the staff also introduced the functions of each studio. Being curious and enchanted, the students listened attentively to the explanation and took photos from time to time.

Subsequently, international students walked around in groups and interviewed passersby randomly. Being more than a building, Xicun Courtyard has witnessed the changes of the times and carries the memories of several generations. The students had cordial exchanges with passersby concerning the impressions of Xicun and Chengdu culture. They shared their views and got a better understanding of the mundane culture of Chengdu.

Finally, teachers led students to the bamboo forest and brewed tea sitting around the stove. Students sat around the table to chat about daily life, which reminds people of an ancient practice of Chinese learned men. Alex, a student from the UK, after talking to passersby, noted that this building was very 'inclusive' and shared his understanding of the word 'inclusive' - people inside can go out, and people outside can also come in. Other international students also indicated that they benefited greatly from this event. They experienced not only the vitality of the renovated old quarters, but also the charm of Chengdu's slow living.
