At 06:15 on May 16, 2022, Beijing time, or 04:00 on May 16, 2022, Nepalese local time, Ram Kumar Shrestha, an alumnus of our university from Nepal, successfully made it to the peak of Mount Everest from the Nepalese border.
Ram Kumar Shrestha, as an international student of Sichuan University, was enrolled in the MBBS program (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) at the West China School of Clinical Medicine from 2002 to 2007. Now, he is a neurosurgeon practicing in a private hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal. Upon graduation, Ram returned to his motherland and has since been actively involved in the exchange events among our Nepalese alumni. Moreover, he is also devoted to the ongoing establishment of the Nepalese Alumni Chapter of the West China School of Clinical Medicine, Sichuan University.
The MBBS program refers to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program tailored to international students. The West China School of Clinical Medicine, Sichuan University, is one of the seven schools that are approved by the Ministry of Education to enroll over 100 students in the MBBS program each year. Since the beginning of the program in 2001, a total of 1,621 international students have been trained in 21 classes. And the countries where the students come from have expanded from a few South Asian countries such as Nepal and India to over 30 American and Eurasian countries including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Through this program, a host of excellent clinicians were trained and sent back to their mother countries. These outstanding doctors are widely praised, which also greatly improves the international reputation of Sichuan University. Nowadays, the MBBS program has become one of the most popular international-facing and English-taught programs offered by Sichuan University, with its sound development, ample applicants, and quality training.
