On June 7th, a delegation from Sichuan University successfully convened an overseas SCU promotional event in the Bavarian capital of Munich. SCU Vice President Yan Shijing; President of the Technische Universität Clausthal (Clausthal University of Technology), Thomas Hanschke; Head of the Education Department of the Chinese Consulate in Munich, Huang Chongling; Professor Hou Zhengmeng of Clausthal University of Technology, and relevant personnel of Sichuan University joined the event.
Yan Shijing opened the meeting by offering an introduction to Sichuan University, its present state, development, and future orientation, and went on to review the long and fruitful history of solid cooperation between SCU and institutions of higher learning in Germany. SCU recognizes the vital role of talent cultivation in impacting the long-term development of a university, Yan noted, and welcomes international scholars who want to make China, Sichuan, and Chengdu their home and would choose SCU as a platform for their professional and academic development.
Thomas Hanschke, President of Clausthal University of Technology, and Huang Chongling, Head of the Education Department of the Chinese Consulate in Munich, in turn addressed the audience of international scholars.
Dr. Wei Chang, researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research and enrolled, who studied and has been working in Germany, joined the event to specifically address the issue of why he had chosen to return to China and why he selected Sichuan University as his new employer. In his promotional speech, Dr. Wei encouraged his fellow scholars to relocate to Sichuan: “The road to the ‘land of plenty’ (tiānfǔzhīguó) is no longer arduous: Come to Sichuan and find out for yourself!”
Five young scholars from the Free University of Berlin, the Technical University of Berlin, Clausthal University of Technology, the University of Basel, and the University of Toulouse, respectively, signed contracts with SCU on the spot.
Many young academics who attended the event commented that the talks given helped them better understand developments in the contemporary Chinese academic job market and gave them important pointers for their own future career planning.
his was the first time Sichuan University went abroad to hold an international promotional event of this kind; it was an undertaking to which the university’s leadership attached a great deal of importance, hoping that by way of this and similar events have the chance to learn about the excellent opportunities and unique working environment at SCU. overseas special forum and SCU overseas promotional event are important recruiting channels and part of the university’s wider internationalization. Other promotional events are also planned for the coming year in England and the United States.
