The International Conference for Energy, Environment and Commercial Civilization Held at Sichuan University

From October 22nd to 23rd, the first session of “International Conference for Energy, Environment and Commercial Civilization” was held at Sichuan University (SCU). This conference was attended by over 60 heads and academicians of various Academies of Sciences and Academies of Engineering, presidents of internationally-known universities, deans of business colleges and professors from 27 countries and regions including US, India, Japan, Russia, Canada and Pakistan, as well as over 70 outstanding entrepreneur representatives, together with the leaders of related departments under NDRC. They had in-depth discussion centering on the three major topics, namely, Energy, Environment and Commercial Civilization.

This conference is a high-end international forum organized and hosted by Sichuan University, in line with the state’s “One Belt and One Road” strategy, targeted at strengthening academic interaction, cultural, and educational exchange, transnational cooperation, building a topnotch dialogue platform for collision and confluence of difference thoughts and ideas from experts as well as educational, commercial and political circles of various countries, and playing an active role in facilitating win-win development and common prosperity.

President Heping Xie indicated in his greeting speech, as a top-level research-based comprehensive university located along the “One Belt and One Road”, Sichuan University shall actively shoulder voluntarily the social responsibility to participate in resolving tough issues hindering the development on the earth, and contribute to the sustainable development of the “One Belt and One Road” region and the human society as a whole; this high-end international academic forum, built by Sichuan University in light of the national “One Belt and One Road” strategy, would serve as a good communication and cooperation platform for the universities and colleges along “Silk Road Economic Belt” to incorporate themselves into the “One Belt and One Road” construction, and provide services to facilitate economic and social development in the countries along the Belt and Road. He added, the successful holding of this conference was bound to serve as a bond bridging the universities and colleges with the countries along “One Belt and One Road”, an important platform providing high-standard consultancy service for the “One Belt and One Road” strategy, and a key force to boost the implementation of this strategy of great importance as well.

Dajian Lin, the former deputy director of the International Cooperation Department of the National Development and Reform Commission and the former counselor of the Chinese Mission to the EU, pointed out in her speech: China’s “One Belt and One Road” initiative was an active response to the evolution of current international situation and international political and economic layout; jointly development of “One Belt and One Road” coincided with the fundamental interests of the international society, and highlighted human’s common ideal and common pursuit; as a positive exploration of a new mode for international cooperation and global governance, it will inject new positive energy in world peace and development. She emphasized that common economic development, social harmony and stability as well as regional long-term stability would be the maximum return brought by “One Belt and One Road”.

In their respective keynote speeches, Mr. Baldev Raj, former director of National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore, India, underlined that under the context of energy problem, environmental problem and commercial civilization problem which have posed unprecedented impact on the world and exerted great pressure on every country, such thorny issues can only be settled through integration of various strengths, combination of realistic problems with theoretic study plus innovative cooperation; Mr. Gheorghe Duca, who is the president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, expressed that the topics of this conference were crucial to future development of the world, and stressed the need to learn from the nature and to think deeply about how to promote sustainable exploitation of natural resources and gear up the development of commercial civilization; Mr. Mohamed Hag Ali Hassan, past executive director of the World Academy of Sciences, pointed out that this conference was “a meeting of landmark significance”, and spoke highly of the great endeavor made in and contribution to international students cultivation by Sichuan University; vice president of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Mr. Ibrahim Guliyev expressed his desire to boost exchange and cooperation between Azerbaijan scientists and world-class experts and scholars by virtue of this conference, targeting at in-depth discussion and practical solutions to the existing problems related to energy, environment and business civilization; and the secretary general of International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Sciences IASCS, Mr. Gerhard Chroust conveyed the wishes of the Academy to provide help for construction of the “new ‘Silk Road’” via this conference, and propel the integration of theory and practice during the exchange and cooperation activities between scholars and experts from various countries along the Belt and the Road.

During the 2-day event, more than 100 scholars, experts and entrepreneurs from various countries and regions presented excellent lectures and opinions surrounding the topics, and had profound and extensive discussions about the conflict and relation between energy, environment and commercial civilization as well as solution concerned. It is acknowledged that this conference will play a positive role in and make an important contribution to the acceleration of international dialogue and extensive cooperation in the areas of energy, environment and commercial civilization, attracting more people to pay attention to balanced development of energy, environment and commercial civilization, exploring energy cooperation, coordinating environment conservation and realizing commercial civilization.
