SCU Hosts International Consensus Conference: “Definitions in Biomaterials”

Date:2018/06/15

Over 50 leading scientists form around the world gathered at Sichuan University for a consensus conference on biomaterials, at which SCU’s Professor Zhang Xingdong proposed a new definition of “tissue-inducing biomaterials.”

From June 11-12, Sichuan University and the Chinese Society for Biomaterials successfully co-hosted the 2018 Conference on Definitions in Biomaterials, organized by the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering. More than 50 eminent biomaterials scientists from 17 countries and regions, including China, U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, India, Portugal, Romania, Hong Kong S.A.R. and Taipei, attended the conference. SCU’s Professor Zhang Xingdong, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and overseas member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, chaired the sessions.

At the beginning of the conference, SCU Vice President Professor Xu Weilin, on behalf of the university, extended his thanks and a warm welcome to the attending delegates and briefly introduced the present state of research in the field of biomaterials science and engineering at SCU. The conference, Xu stated, promised to further improve, revise and re-define definitions in the discipline of biomaterials, which would constitute a milestone in the history of biomaterials and significantly impact the development of the biomaterials science and engineering worldwide.

The conference featured six subject-specific sessions, namely General Biomaterials, Biocompatibility, Regenerative Medicine, Implantable and Interventional Devices, Drug/Gene/Contrast Agent Delivery, and Emerging Biomaterials and Technologies. Professor David Williams (Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the U.K.), Professor James Anderson (Member of the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Medicine in the U.S.), Professor William Wagner (Editor-in-Chief of the distinguished biomaterials journal ActaBiomaterialia), Professor Chang Jiang (Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry), Professor Nicholas Peppas (Member of the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Medicine in the U.S. and Overseas Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering) and Professor Kristi Anseth (Member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Medicine in the U.S.) were the plenary speakers of the six sessions, respectively. After heated discussions, consensus on definitions was reached for a number of different terms.

This conference was the second consensus conference on biomaterials definitions following the first one held under the auspices of the European Society for Biomaterials in 1986. However, for this time, the conference was organized by the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering, and the attendees were from 17 countries and regions. The proceedings of the conference will be co-edited by Professor Zhang Xingdong and Professor David Williams and published as a book provisionally titled “Biomaterials Definitions for the 21stCentury” by Elsevier. During the conference, Professor Zhang proposed a new definition of “tissue-inducing biomaterials,” which won the general consensus and was included in the definitions list. It was the first definition in biomaterials proposed by a Chinese scientist.
