SCU “Belt and Road” Scholarship –Short-Term Overseas Students Cultivation Program for South Asian Studies Kicked Off

March 14th, morning, the Wangjiang Campus of SCU hosted the opening ceremony of Sichuan University’s “Belt and Road” Scholarship – Short-term Overseas Students Cultivation Program for South Asian Studies. Luo Zhongshu, Executive Vice Chairman of the SCU University Council, delivered a speech on behalf of the university, and extended a warm welcome to all overseas students for their studies and exchanges in Sichuan University.

Sichuan University is taking advantages of the “Belt and Road” strategy to speed up its internationalized development in a holistic manner. For this purpose, the University has set up the “Belt and Road” Scholarship with a capital pool of CNY 0.1 billion, specially for subsidizing and encouraging overseas students from the “Belt and Road” initiative-related countries, South Asia in particular, to study in SCU; meanwhile, it has organized two short-term courses for international students exchange, and several high-end training courses for the civil servants from the countries along the “Belt and Road”, it has also established such international cultural exchange platforms as Himalaya Multimedia Database and Himalaya Museum.

The short-term overseas student cultivation program subsidized by the “Belt and Road” Scholarship is executed by the University’s South Asia Research Institute together with relevant departments. It is aimed at introducing and lecturing on China’s development and regional cooperation under the backdrop of the “Belt and Road” initiative, catalyzing the communication and friendship among the countries concerned, so as to make contribution to implementing the “Belt and Road” Strategy, and facilitating international peace and security.

During the ceremony, the leaders of relevant departments and the teachers of South Asia Research Institute gave the international students an insight into the University’s policy towards foreign students and related information, as well as the general information about the University’s research in humanities and social sciences, and then expressed their hope that all overseas students will study hard. The representatives of international students from Afghanistan, India, Nepal, and Poland made their presentations successively, expressing that they will cherish this study opportunity, pick up on China’s current development situation and external policies, and try to serve as a bridge of cooperation and friendship between China and their respective countries.
