West China Hospital and Thermo Fisher Research Platform Enlisted in the Sino-American People-to-people Engagement

Recently, vice premier Liu Yandong of the State Council of the PRC and John Kerry, the Secretary of State of the U.S, co-chaired the 7th Annual U.S.-China High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange. The precision medicine joint platform established by the West China Hospital and the Thermo Fisher Scientific, as one of the six representative achievements, held its signing ceremony on June 6th in Beijing. Director Li Weimin of the West China Hospital and Gianluca Pettiti, president of Thermo Fisher China signed a MOU. Hao Ping, deputy education minister of the PRC and Richard Stengel, deputy secretary of state of the U.S. witnessed the signing ceremony.

According to the agreement, both sides intend to carry out extensive cooperation in several fields so as to build the West China Hospital into a world-leading molecular diagnosis center. Cooperation hereto includes the establishment of a “modern clinical pathology united laboratory”, joint construction of a college-enterprise cooperation platform in proteomics and molecular diagnosis, a physician training base for pathology quality control and modern pathology diagnosis, so as to streamline the integrated business operation of high efficiency and safety.

The MOU signed by both countries is a part of cooperation and exchange in medical science and technology. Such mutual cooperation will fuel the development of precision medicine and pathological research in western regions for the benefit of the public.

Director Li said that the West China Hospital strives to seek for cooperation with top-end hi-tech enterprise in the world, thus strengthening the advantages in pathology. It is expected to improve the quality of pathological research and clinical diagnosis together with Thermo Fisher. With unceasingly expanded cooperation, the development of precise pathological diagnosis in the west region can be accelerated, eventually bringing health and well-being to the society and the public, he added.
