SCU Hosts a Visit by Ho-Kwang Mao, Fellow of the American Academy of Science

On Sept. 9, Prof. Xie Heping, President of Sichuan University, met with Mr. Ho-Kwang Mao, a member of the American Academy of Science, a foreign fellow of both the Royal Society of London and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an internationally renowned expert in high pressure physics, at the VIP Hall of Mingde Building, Wangjiang Campus. Lin Haiqing, Director of Beijing Research Center of Computing Science, Vice President Liang Bin as well as other related personnel of the SCU participated in the meeting.

On behalf of the University, President Xie expressed warm welcome to the visit of Ho-Kwang Mao at the eve of SCU’s celebration of its 121stanniversary, and briefly introduced the basic information about SCU’s history, discipline construction, scientific research, and personnel training, etc. Sichuan University attaches great importance to the introduction and cultivation of talents, and is now striving to build itself into a world-class university in an all-around way, said Mr. Xie. Academician Ho-Kwang Mao has achieved remarkable results in his research field covering high pressure physics, high pressure chemistry, high pressure material science, geophysics and other fields, and this visit will be of great significance for the promotion of international competitiveness of Sichuan University in physics, geonomy, materials science and other disciplines, he noted. I hope that academician Ho-Kwang Mao will continue to care about and support SCU’s development in such disciplines, and provide more guidance and support to SCU in personnel training, academic exchanges and research cooperation, President Xie added.

Academician Ho-Kwang Mao expressed appreciation to SCU’s hospitality. He briefed the counterpart of the basic situation of his research in the fields like high pressure science and geophysical science, expressing that he will conduct in-depth exchanges with relevant institutes of Sichuan University in an open and cooperative attitude, and jointly beef up the cooperative research and cultivation of students.
