The predecessor of College of Architecture and Environment is referred to as School of Urban Construction and Environmental Protection, which was approved by the Ministry of Education in 1988. After 20 years, it has developed into a comprehensive research institute which integrates various disciplines including engineering mechanics, civil engineering, environmental science, architecture, planning and garden engineering. At the moment the college has four departments: Mechanics & Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science & Engineering and Architecture. There are 4 Doctor's degree authorization centres of first-level discipline (Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science & Engineering, Biomedical Engineering), 7 Master’s degree authorization centres of first-level discipline (Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science & Engineering, Architecture, Urban & Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, Biomechanics), 3 Professional Master’s degree authorization centres (Architecture & Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Landscape Engineering) and 10 Undergraduate degree programmes (Engineering Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Plumbing Science & Engineering, Construction Costs, Building Environment & Energy Application Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture) in the college. There are 7 international-cooperation research institutes, 1 national engineering centre, 1 national ‘985’major technology & innovation platform, 1 key laboratory of Education Ministry, 7 key research institutes, 4 provincial key laboratories, 4 college-enterprise collaboration research centres, 7 discipline laboratories and more than 40 undergraduate internship bases. At present the college has 3110 students, including 2329 undergraduates, 428 master candidates, 229 Master of Engineering candidates and 124 doctoral candidates.

There are 242 employees in the college, 191 of which are full-time teachers, including 1 member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 22 Provincial Academic and Technology Leaders and candidates, 27 doctoral supervisors, 44 professors, 73 vice professors and senior engineers, 5 full-time foreign teachers, and more than 30 honorary professors and guest professors including members of the National Academy of Sciences.

nographs, more than 1600 published academic papers, more than 400 papers listed in SCI, EI and ISTP. The scientific research funds contributed to the university from 2008 to 2014 totals 210 million yuan.

As one college of SCU for Undergraduate-“323+X”, the College focuses on fostering undergraduate students’ diverse innovative capabilities, strengthening teaching practice and improving the students’ application ability. The college conducts Scientific Research Training Programme for Undergraduates, and has hosted innovation exhibitions for undergraduate students three times since 2012. Every year, the number of Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Projects exceeds 100, and the project coverage among all students at school approaches 100%. These measures have successfully accelerated the transformation from classroom teaching to scientific research and innovation, and improved the effect of college education. Thus, the college has been awarded with ‘Advanced Unit of Undergraduate Teaching’ for the last three years, and listed as Integral Education Reform Unit.

The college puts emphasis on international cooperation, introducing overseas talents and holding international-joint programmes. The yearly Sino-Germany WAYS Program Annual Conference and Seminar has accelerated cooperation in scientific research between the two sides, and also enhanced international reputation of the college as well as the university in this field. Sino-Germany Water Environment Management Research Center is becoming known to the world. The school has established joint projects with numerous overseas universities and colleges: University of Washington, Denmark VIA University College, Clausthal University of Technology, Lawrence Technological University, School of Engineering and School of Design of National Taipei University of Technology, RWTH Aachen University, Kumamoto University, University of Tokyo, University of Paris X-Nanterre, University of Michigan, University of Naples Federico II, National Cheng Kung University, ENSAPLV, etc. Among the projects, the double-degree project: Civil and Environmental Engineering of Sichuan University and Clausthal University of Technology is one of the earliest double-degree projects of Sichuan University. By now, there have been altogether 150 double-degree graduates in 7 school years.

The UIP (University Immersion Program) provides the college with opportunity for international cooperation, and the number of visiting students grows year by year. The college works on improving the quality of UIP courses and gradually presents unique features in the program. Through the program, the students broaden their horizon and have their innovative capability improved. “Exchange and Cooperation——a New Prospect of the Country” International Exchange Camp combining University of Washington, National Cheng Kung University and Sichuan University was widely reported by media and drew public attention. With these international exchange camp and English courses by foreign scholars in UIP, the effect of the school’s foreign exchange programmes is spoken highly of by local media and Sichuan University. Hence the college is awarded with ‘Advanced Unit of International Cooperation and Exchange’ by Sichuan University.
